Approximately 765,000 Tesla vehicles in the U.S. are equipped with automated driving systems, which can control steering, speed and braking, but cannot yet safely replace human drivers entirely.
In a series on Twitter on Tuesday, David Colombo claimed that he had been able to remotely access the vehicles and disable Sentry Mode-a feature that allows Tesla owners to monitor suspicious activities-unlock doors and windows, and start the cars without keys.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Dec 22. that it has opened a formal investigation into Tesla over the safety of its front center touchscreen.
Musk announced the news on Twitter and invited people to participate in the program, writing: "SpaceX is starting a program to take CO2 out of atmosphere & turn it into rocket fuel. Please join if interested."
Earlier this week, Musk asked his Twitter followers to vote to determine the future of his Tesla holdings, but filings reveal the sale was already scheduled.
